David Bohm: On Dialogue

On Dialogue

Description

David Bohm is considered one of the best physicists of all time. He also had a deep interest in human communication and creativity. Influential in both management and communication theory in what is known 'Bohm Dialogue', On Dialogue is both inspiring and pioneering. Bohm considers the origin and very meaning of dialogue, reflecting on what gets in the way of "true dialogue". He argues that dialogue, as a radical form of exploration that allows different views to be presented, leads us beyond the impasse of conflict and argument to the forming of new views. With a new foreword by Dean Rickles.

Standing in Another Man's Grave

Description

A series of seemingly random disappearances - stretching back to the millennium. A mother determined to find the truth. A retired cop desperate to get his old life back...It's been some time since Rebus was forced to retire, and he now works as a civilian in a cold-case unit. So when a long-dead case bursts back to life, he can't resist the opportunity to get his feet under the CID desk once more. But Rebus is as stubborn and anarchic as ever, and he quickly finds himself in deep with pretty much everyone, including DI Siobhan Clarke. All Rebus wants to do is uncover the truth. The big question is: can he be the man he once was and still stay on the right side of the law? Read by James Macpherson

Renaissance physicians timed surgical procedures according to the position of the stars, and instructed epileptics to collect fresh blood from the newly beheaded. The World of Gloria Vanderbilt is a pictorial biography of the charismatic heiress who first captured America's heart at the tender age of ten, when she became the subject of a scandalous custody trial. A true style-maker, Vanderbilt's story comes to life through the eyes of some of the greatest photographers of the twentieth century. Since her much-heralded birth in 1924, Gloria Vanderbilt has been many things: an heiress, a painter, a decorator, a muse, a designer, a model, a writer, an entrepreneur, a socialite, an icon-but most of all, a survivor. She brought the Vanderbilt name out of the Gilded Age and into the Digital Age, reinventing herself over and over along the way. Hers is a story of charisma, glamour, and heartbreaking loss, told here through photographs, drawings, and paintings, including many from Gloria's own archive. The photographers Standing in Another Man's Grave ebook pdf whose portraits of her appear in this volume include Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Cecil Beaton, Inge Morath, Horst P.

Ibn Hazm,A R Nykl: The Ring of the Dove; Or the Dove's Neck-Ring

The Ring of the Dove; Or the Dove's Neck-Ring

Description

2014 Reprint of 1931 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Ibn Hazm (died 1064), drawing upon personal experiences, composed this famous work on "pure love" called awq al- am mah ("The Ring of the Dove" or "Dove's Neck Ring"). Its lucid prose, interspersed with poetry, has many times been translated into Western languages. The theme of love was especially popular, and a wide variety of intellectuals focused their attention on it. It is a charmingly intimate portrait of social intercourse within the Islamic community of the 11th century. This work, a blend of sensibilities nurtured by a harem education in his youth and the prudery of a scholar's Koran based ideals, was Ibn Hazm's masterpiece of courtly love-love Platonic, exquisite by unrequited. Europe's troubadours imbibed "The Dove" like a fine wine.

In a story which is partly a thriller, partly an exploration of language itself, Mia Couto surprises and delights, and shows just why he is one of the most important African writers of today. Everyone wants to feel calm and happy, but few of us manage it. The truth is that we are just not equipped for the twenty-first century - it is too fast, too crowded, too 24/7. And the more stressed we become, the harder it is to find the quiet oases that are essential to our wellbeing. It doesn't have to be this way! Here is the antidote to the clamour and strain of everyday living, a means of breaking the vicious cycle of stress. It is a book of mindfulness exercises - instant and effective ways to slow down and find some serenity - wherever you are and whatever you are doing. This beautiful but practical title draws on a wide range of psychological techniques, including mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy and emotional brain training - all of them proven to work. The perfect size to keep in a handbag of pocket, this book has been designed as a Lonely Planet Ireland free download pdf tool to keep close by, and to turn to at any point in a busy day. So, open it up and find some inner calm in a noisy world.

Philip Ball: The Water Kingdom

The Water Kingdom

Description

It is selected as a Book of the Year by The Times and The Economist. A secret history of China - a fresh new way of thinking about a people, a civilization, an epic story. The Water Kingdom takes us on a grand journey through China's past and present, offering a unique window through which we can begin to grasp the overwhelming complexity and teeming energy of the country and its people. Water is a key that unlocks much of Chinese history and thought. The ubiquitous relationship that the Chinese people have had with water has made it an enduring metaphor for philosophical thought and artistic expression. From the Han emperors to Mao, the ability to manage the waters - to provide irrigation and defend against floods - became a barometer of political legitimacy, and attempts to do so have involved engineering works on a gigantic scale. Yet the strain that economic growth is putting on its water resources today may be the greatest threat to China's future. The Water Kingdom is an epic, spell-binding story. Our guides are travellers and explorers, poets and painters, bureaucrats and activists, who have themselves struggled to come to terms with living in a world so shaped and permeated by water.

Irma Grese & Other Infamous SS Female Guards: The Secret Stories of Their Holocaust & Auschwitz Atrocities Revealed

Description

UPDATE: SECOND EDITION - WITH ADDED CONTENT!! "***Warning - This book contains graphic pictures that may not be suitable for all ages***" There is no doubt that the atrocities committed in WWII are hard to stomach. Most people think of the guards at the worst concentration camps as the epitome of Hitler's regime, the blonde hair, blue-eyed, man. There were female guards through that made some of those men look like choirboys. Irma Grese, probably the most notorious of them all, was lesson in depravity who seemed to find pleasure and enjoyment in the torture inflicted on others. Find out what she said in her last moments on the gallows. Dorothea Binz was equally sadistic. Read more about what might have caused her to develop these depraved actions. Could a broken heart be the cause of it? The controversy regarding Ilse Koch is still ongoing today. Was she really the "Red Witch" as some claimed or did her actions have lesser consequences? While there's no doubt she wasn't innocent, some of the claims against her have been questioned over the years. Learn more about what she did or may not have done. These are just a few of the stories contained in this book. We explore the mind of the female SS Guard. Some of the claims are shocking. The author examines why we find so many of these crimes even more shocking than similar crimes committed by male guards. Not meant to sensationalize but to educate, these stories are approached with a lighter tone that doesn't trivialize but lessens the blow the brutality. History can be hard to hear. If we are determined to never again let these atrocities occur again though, we must learn the lessons of it now. Comments From Other Readers "I'll admit, this was hard to read at times. Some of the things that these women did, not because they were forced to but because they wanted to, were difficult to take. Honestly though, it wasn't much worse than what some of their male counterparts did. I think it's harder to read about women committing these crimes. The author does a great job at not sensationalizing it and keeps the tone of the book conversational. Great book!" - George (Alabama, US) "The first thing that caught my eye about this book was some of the images. I haven't seen these things in other books before. I know they're out there but it's not something that you come across very often. The stories and analysis in this book were well written and thought out. I liked the tone that the author took. It's different from other books. It made the stories more palatable. If you want to understand this side of history, this is the book to do it." - Sami (Massachusetts, US)
